Transformation to move beyond pain and limitation
Anat Baniel’s NeuroMovement® method is borne from a fundamental understanding that movement is the language of the brain. Movement stimulates the brain to grow and organise itself, whilst at the same time the brain marshals all movement, thoughts, emotions and actions.
The brain has a huge capacity for rapid change, growth and development (otherwise known as brain plasticity).
Taking advantage of this knowledge, the method uses movement to communicate with the brain, to grow and upgrade itself to become more skilful in movement, action, thinking, and emotions: understanding the person as an integrated, highly complex system where the mind and body are one, self-organising system.
Working closely with children and adults over many years, Anat Baniel honed the method to incorporate The Nine Essentials, which clearly identify how to best get the brain’s attention during a NeuroMovement® lesson. In doing so, the brain is more able to successfully guide the body and mind to rapidly change to higher levels of co-ordination and function.

Movement with attention
By bringing attention to what we feel when we move, the brain starts building billions of new neurological connections that facilitate changes in learning and transformation.
Fast we can only do what we already know, and means that we fall back on old learned patterns. To overcome limitations and master new skills we need to slow down to get the brain’s attention which in turn stimulates the formation of rich new neural patterns.
Variation gives the brain a richness of information it needs to create new possibilities in movement, thought, feelings and action. It helps to increase awareness, to break away from stuck, rigid old patterns and to awaken new ideas and possibilities in your life.
To beat pain and limitation the brain needs less force. Reducing the force and effort with which we move and think, increases our sensitivity and ability to perceive differences. These perceptions give the brain new information it needs to organise action successfully.
Enthusiasm lights up your brain. By approaching a task with enthusiasm the brain stands up and takes notice. It tells your brain what’s important to you and helps the learning process. It is a skill that you can develop and become good at.
Holding goals loosely allows the brain to prioritise information and to optimise the system for the greatest likelihood of success. Freeing yourself from the compulsion of meeting a goal in a certain way keeps you open-minded, reduces anxiety and increases creativity.
The learning switch
The brain is either in learning mode – the learning switch is on – or it is not. Repetition, drilling, habitual patterns and emotions as we get older, all tend to turn the learning switch off. Activating the learning switch allows the brain to do its job properly, to discover and create new possibilities.
Imagination and dreams
Through imagination the brain figures out new possibilities without actually having to perform, whilst at the same time creating new neural pathways. The use of imagination and dreams enables you to transcend limitations and create the blueprint for future success.
To be aware means to be fully alive and present. It is when your brain is working at its highest level, noticing nuances, revealing options and greatly accelerating the learning process.
In 1981 she became a trainer followed closely by her move to the US in 1982 where she quickly developed a practice with babies and children, athletes, musicians, and adults with back pain and injuries.
Through her many years of working as a trainer, teacher and private practitioner, Anat Baniel went on to evolve her original training into a new method that combines the teachings of Dr Feldenkrais with her own understanding and techniques.
Anat Baniel’s work with children and special needs is world renowned, applauded by parents, health professionals and those at the leading edge of the neurosciences. As more and more brain scientists, medical doctors and other professionals are endorsing her method, she is currently collaborating with Dr Michael Merzenich, a world-renowned neuroscientist and brain plasticity expert, on a pilot research project to create an ABM-based movement programme for traumatic brain injured adults.
Dr Moshe Feldenkrais
Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais was a brilliant physicist, engineer and judo master who, way ahead of his time, pioneered a learning system that uses movement and awareness of self to bring about remarkable changes in the human mind and body.
Based on his understanding of the central nervous system he created a mode that incorporates over 1,000 movement-lessons and personalised hands-on teachings which he designed around specific functions to make it possible for the brain to organise action more effectively.
